HISTORIC RESOURCE SURVEY WORK COMPLETED
After 15 months of photographing and collecting data on over
1,800 buildings in five municipalities, the Conservancy has little time to
rest before applying for a second round of funding to continue the
project. We are thrilled that we were able to accomplish so much in such a
short time span and appreciate all of the hard work by the volunteers, our
consultants Martha Moffat and Lisa Carl Gregory, and Board members Shirley
Hanson, Melissa Cahill and Mary Lou McFarland. We are very grateful for
the support from the PA Historical and Museum Commission staff members
Carol Lee, Dan Diebler and Greg Ramsey, and from the Arcadia Foundation
for donating matching funds for the project.
The Conservancy worked with volunteers from five historical societies
to complete the documentation. They included Horsham Preservation &
Historical Association, Limerick Township Historical Society, Springfield
Township Historical Society, Upper Moreland Historical Association, and
the Wissahickon Valley Historical Society. Volunteers from each group
helped to collect data and photograph historical buildings in each
respective municipality. Through the project the Conservancy provided a
complete set of the material to PHMC, copied the data and photographs to
donate to each historical society, and provided an additional set of the
information for their respective municipalities. The Conservancy will also
contribute the complete resource survey findings to the Montgomery County
Planning Commission.
The Conservancy is planning a reception in the fall to thank all of the
volunteers and to present the surveys to the Montgomery County Planning
Commission. We will be applying for another round of funding so that
survey work can begin again in the fall of 2001.
We would like to know about other historical or community groups who
may be interested in participating. If you are interested, please call
Mary Lou McFarland at 215-283-0383. She will provide you with details on
the number of volunteers needed and data collection and photography
requirements.
