Celebrating our 22nd Year!
The Conservancy of Montgomery County was formed in 1990 to provide individuals, community and historical organizations and local governments with creative and flexible preservation techniques and to coordinate countywide efforts to save valued historic and open space resources.
Our Challenge
Open space in Montgomery County is disappearing at an alarming rate. Since 1985, proposals for residential, commercial, industrial and office uses encompassed more than 74,000 acres or 81 square miles – over 25% of the total area of Montgomery County. In addition, many historic structures are lost each year from neglect, destructive alterations or demolition. Because most of the county’s municipalities have not been surveyed to provide essential information about historic resources, we cannot even begin to understand the extent of the losses.
The most crucial challenge of the Conservancy is to establish throughout the county a strong donor base which will provide the financial support needed for CMC to carry out its work. Your support is needed to help us undertake the programs and projects outlined below.
Programs and Projects
The Conservancy undertakes the following projects to preserve valued county resources for present and future generations:
- Conduct surveys to identify historic buildings, structures and sites, and natural areas that should be saved
- Promote our Conservation Easement Program to protect open space and historic structures
- Work with municipalities and individuals to protect historic structures from insensitive alterations or outright destruction through our Historic Buildings Reuse Program
- Conduct seminars to educate county residents about resources available for land and building preservation
- Act as a county clearinghouse for conservation and preservation related information.
